Buchrezensionen

Blandy & Orendorff & Tindall: Programming Rust

I have only read about half of it. It’s a good book about Rust, but Rust is not for me (yet).

Chantry: David

If you are a christian you probably know “everything” about David. Nevertheless, this is an eye-opening book about a hard man with a childlike faith. There is a lot you can learn from his life.

Cooper & Torczon: Engineering a Compiler

This is a 700 pages book. I read some parts of it when preparing for my thesis. Some of the content (e.g. an algorithm for dominance) you probably will not find in other compiler books.

Donovan & Kernighan: The Go Programming Language

In my opinion, this is the go-to book to learn Go with. Unfortunately, it wasn’t yet published when I learned Go.

Elliot: Passion and Purity

Wow, what a book. This is a MUST (as defined by RFC 2119) for every christian single.

Just two quotes:

It is possible to love passionately and to stay out of bed. I know. We did it.

[…] there is no purity in any of us apart from the blood of Jesus.

There is also a video from the author:

(The german title of this book is: “Eine harte Liebe”).

Harris: Sex is not the Problem

I cannot count the blessings I got from listening to Josh Harris preaching at Covenant Life Church. He and Russell Moore are easily among the pastors that had the most profound impact on my faith. Sadly, Josh isn’t a Christian anymore. But I still have fond memories of his books.

Kochan: Programming in Objective-C

This is the book I learned Objective-C with.

Mahaney: The Cross Centered Life

This is one of the many great books I discovered on Rachel Barkey’s book list. It’s for people like me, that constantly get sidetracked with new business ideas, forgetting the main thing in life.

Btw, I highly recommend Rachel Barkey’s speech:

Madhavapeddy & Minsky: Reald World OCaml

I only read some parts of this book, since I learned OCaml mostly by doing. Can’t tell how approachable it is for total newcomers.

Mason: Das Geheimnis der Ehe

… ist wahrscheinlich das realistischste Buch über die Ehe, das man als Single lesen kann. Kann ich jedem Heiratswilligen nur empfehlen.

Piper: The Hidden Smile of God

… describes how God glorified himself hightly in:

Pollan: In Defence of Food

A good book about healthy food. Written for mortals, not biologists.

Rosen: Apple Machine Language

After learning assembly I had an inner urge to learn machine language too. Even though I probably will not get a job as a 6502 programmer, I don’t want to miss the adventure of writing an executable by hand. After doing the exercises in this book you’ll consider assembly being a high level language.

Stevens: TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1

This book was recommended by my former professor. It starts with the lowest layers and explains every byte sent over the network. I even implemented Ethernet II for a microcontroller just by reading the first few chapters.

Strunk & White: The Elements of Style

If I’d be allowed to read just one book about the Englisch language, this it would be. It’s a piece of art. I recommend the editions 2 or 3. (Later editions have content added not by the original authors).

Tozer: The Pursuit of God

Another good book from Rachel Barkey book list.

Ullman: Elements if ML Programming

I think this is the book that made functional programming click for me. Even though I never used SML in production, it made learning OCaml a lot easier. (I switched to OCaml because there was no SML compiler for OpenBSD at that time).

van der Linden: Expert C Programming

This is a dangerous book: it can make you hate C. Read it after K&R and you’ll be fine.

Waldron: Introduction to RISC Assembly Language Programming

This is the book I learned assembly programming with. It’s quite comprehensible, contains many examples, and is only 120 pages long.
